The bad news is that for globe trekking foreign fighters Pakistan is the new Iraq (which was the old Afghanistan), the Senate just sold out your privacy and chicken tastes better with money.

But the good news is...

You can still see lots of great work from the 2008 Review Santa Fe participants at Flak Photo. Highlights so far include work by Peter Snyder and Thomas Broening. Look for the work of Eric Percher, Colleen Plumb and Rachael Dunville in the next few weeks.

This Saturday I will be moderating a panel discussion on what it means to be an emerging female art photographer in New York City. The panel, organized by Humble Arts Foundation and 3rd Ward, will feature the very talented Rachael Dunville, Tema Stauffer, Cara Phillips, Mary Mattingly and Sarah Small.

As moderator I personally guarantee this discussion will not resemble a Lifetime movie or a mystical moon poem to Gaia, but I will want to press the issue on some obvious and unique challenges faced by women in the art world today.

At least once a week I get an email from a photographer asking me if they should apply to the School of Visual Arts MFA Photography program. My answer is always yes and I give a host of reasons why they should consider the school including the facilities, the faculty and the location. The best reason I can give, however, is the amazing work and success of the people who have been through program.

Today I opened the latest edition Photograph Magazine and it seemed like an SVA yearbook. Besides my own show currently at Paul Kopeikin, thank you very much, there were full and two-page ads for upcoming solo shows by fabulous SVA grads Thomas Holton, JeongMee Yoon and Matthew Pillsbury. Throw in Shen Wei, Katie Kingma, Daniel Traub and Domingo Milella being named to PDN's 30 list and you are talking about a red letter week for the School of Visual Arts MFA program.

I Love Gifts in the Mail: Colin Blakely and Rachael Dunville

Last week was a gift-in-the-mail bonanza. Colin Blakely sent me a signed print from his Somewhere in Middle America series. I first saw the image, The Seeming Impenetrability of the Space Between, at the Griffin Museum and promptly gushed about it on my blog. If you are in the Boston area you can still see the photo in person at the 13th Annual Griffin Juried Show. Also, be sure to check out Colin's blog. Probably the most interesting and honest take out there on the struggle to be a successful photographer.

Also in the mailbox was a signed copy of Rachael Dunville's Springtown catalogue. You can pick up your own copy at photo-eye. The Springtown show is still on display at Peer Gallery and just got a lovely write-up in the New Yorker. Not too shabby.

In addition to these wonderful gifts, I have also received my first two pieces from 20x200. Arriving were gorgeous prints by Amy Ross and Carrie Marill, respectively. Both prints are still available. This Thursday is the opening reception for Rachael Dunville's first solo exhibition at Peer Gallery. Rachael is a good friend and fellow SVA MFA alum who has been working on her great Springtown series for a few years now. I can't wait to see the finished series hanging on a gallery wall.
