But The Good News Is...

Dad and Patty in the office, last days open, Trainer, Penna © Lisa Kereszi
Lux Interior is dead and my husband is a bit distraught.

But the good news is...

Friend and early mentor, Lisa Kereszi, finally has a Web site. When I teach my class about photographers who have mastered color, I show Lisa's work.

Sarah Sudhoff has made the Texas to New York trek this week so she can attend the opening tonight of Hysteria: Past yet Present at Rutgers University. Sarah's work will be featured prominently in this group show that explores "hysteria in relation to gender construction, feminine identity and pathologization, and sheer physical form given to the condition in the imagination of artists." If you are in the Newark area you should definitely come out for the opening.

I've Been Hijacked

I just received two copies of the wonderful new photo book, Hijacked Volume One: Australia and America. The book was edited by Mark McPherson & Max Pam and is an excellent survey of emerging photographers in Australia and America. They were kind enough to include eight of my photos over twelve pages in the book. Also included are friends Jon Gitelson, Lisa Kereszi, Bill Sullivan, Shen Wei, Grant Willing and Alana Celii.

Mark McPherson has been quite the hustler and has managed to set up book launches and exhibitions in New York, Berlin and Australia. The video below is from ABC Australia about the exhibit at The Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney.

Pick up a copy today.

Every Story Takes a Picture

© Alison Brady 2006
New York Magazine highlights images from three photographers currently showing in New York galleries. The three photographers, Lisa Kereszi, Alison Brady, and Kelli Connell, happen to be three of my favorites and all happen to be women. I mention they are women because, sadly, the paucity of wall and written space committed to female artists in this city makes this a rare and significant event. But, I digress...

Alison is the first photographer from our amazing SVA MFA class to have a solo show. I am so happy for her and look forward to seeing her work at Massimo Audiello.

Cheap Thrills with Lisa Kereszi

DJ Booth, South Beach © Lisa Kereszi 2002
My best advice to those just starting out in the photography world is to reach out to photographers who are where you want to be and bug them for advice. A couple of years ago I did this with Lisa Kereszi and she was more than generous with her time and input. She challenged my work and pushed me to advance my vision and focus my career path. Lisa's wisdom and experience has a had a profound impact on my development as a photographer.

I mention this because last tonight I attended the opening of Lisa's new solo show, Cheap Thrills, at Yancey Richardson. The joint was packed and the prints looked amazing. Lisa has a gift for finding and elevating amazing little secrets hiding out under our nose. She is also the nicest and most sincere person you will meet and I consider myself fortunate to call her a good friend.

I should also mention Lisa Kereszi's fabulous husband, Ben Donaldson, who is a very talented photographer in his own right. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to assist for Ben at the ICP. His current show, Summerland, at jen bekman gallery is not to be missed. Talk about your power couple.

The show at Yancey Richardson proved doubleplusgood because another friend, Sarah Schorr, was showing work in the project gallery and that brought out the SVA crew en mass. It was wonderful to see everyone and see Sarah's work.

ARTWALK NY 2006

Caged, © Amy Stein 2006
ARTWALK NY is one of the great art benefit auctions in the city with the proceeds supporting the amazing work of the Coalition for the Homeless. I was honored to be asked to include a photograph from the Domesticated series in this years silent auction. This is a good opportunity to support a worthwhile organization and pick up work by great young photographers like Keren Moscovitch, Lisa Kereszi, Nicholas Prior, Sarah Schorr and Alix Smith.

Coalition for the Homeless
Coalition for the Homeless is dedicated to the principle that decent shelter, sufficient food, affordable housing, and the chance to work for a living wage are fundamental rights in a civilized society. The Coalition provides vital services to over 3,500 New Yorkers each day. We use this frontline experience to advocate for long-term public solutions to mass homelessness that are more humane and cost-effective than current government programs.

ARTWALK NY 2006
Now in its twelfth year, ARTWALK NY has become one of New York City's largest and most anticipated annual art benefit auctions. Each year ARTWALK NY unites artists and art-lovers in an effort to help the homeless men, women, and children living in New York City.

This years ARTWALK NY is co-chaired by Richard Gere, Carey Lowell and Kayce Freed Jennings. The artist honoree will be Julian Schnabel.
