Tales From FotoFest

The stage is set for portfolio speed-dating
I've always wanted to go to Houston for FotoFest. The shows, the people, the line dancing. One year I'll get down there. In the meantime I asked a two friends, Phil Toledano and Justine Reyes, who attended the portfolio reviews this year to report back from the trenches. It's been a few days since they returned home, but you get the idea.

Now I know what it’s like to be a cow at the meat-yard, waiting for the compressed-air bolt to the forehead.

Fotofest is a very interesting experience-it peels back the little band-aid the covers the giant weeping rash of desperation that all (ok-most) of us suffer from. Of course, it’s useful-for some of us, it’ll crack open a career. But (to quote George Bush, which I try and do as much as possible) make no mistake-we’re all down here dancing about like monkeys, selling our wares. Is this a little bleak? Well, I suppose so, but then again, I am the Morrisey of photography.

Sometimes I’m asked what I hope to get out of a meeting. Honestly? The only thing I’d like to hear is something along the lines of: “I’ve never seen genius of this importance before in my life-hang on, let me get the curator of MOMA on the horn” That would be great. Or a screaming artgasm ‘when harry met sally’ style, reviewer white-knuckling the sides of the table.

But I’ll settle for a group show in Nebraska.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve had a good time, and I’ve had some lovely conversations with some people who seemed (at the time) interested. I also met some really great photographers (red Sonja and death reyes-shout out to my peeps!)

We all ask each other how it’s going, and it’s a question I find very hard to answer. Some people liked my work, others, not so much. You really don’t have any clue. It can take a week, a month, or a few years.

Justine Reyes
Last day at Fotofest. Trying to summarize this experience seems like an extremely daunting task at the moment. I am exhausted. Being a first timer I guess I didn’t quite know what to expect. For only four days a lot is packed in. I met with ten reviewers today alone and then did an open portfolio night.

On the good side I have gotten to know some really lovely people, talented photographers and critical thinkers. It has been fun looking at people’s work and getting feedback on my own.

On the bad side there is at times this odd competitive/aggressive energy that I naively wasn’t expecting to encounter.

All in all I am glad I got to come and be a part of it although I don’t think I will be able to process this experience fully until after I return home and escape the vortex that is Fotofest.

Three Shows and a Trip to Woodstock

Still Life with Banana, Purse and Change © Justine Reyes
The holiday season is behind us and I'm very much looking forward to the first openings of the new year. Good friends Tim Briner, Ruben Natal-San Miguel, and Justine Reyes all have what promise to be stellar shows opening this week.

I met Tim Briner in 2007 days before he was about to set off on his year long trip exploring small town America. During his trip he sent me many postcards from the road written on the side of Boont Amber Ale beer cases. He's back from the boonies and set to debut his impressive new work from the Boonville series.

Opening Reception: Thursday, Jan 7, 6-8pm

Ruben Natal-San Miguel is one of the most genuine, big-hearted people you could meet. He loves photography and photographers, and I bet if you come to his show opening and say hello he'll love you too. He's curating the group show Versus which opens at Hous Project, also on Thursday. Many of my favorite contemporary photographers will be represented including Hank Willis Thomas, Matthew Pillsbury, Phillip Toledano, and fellow POCers Cara Phillips and Brian Ulrich.

The weekend promises even more great photography. Justine Reyes' gorgeous (trust me, I've seen them, these prints are gorgeous) work from her Vanitas series will be on view at the Center for Photography at Woodstock beginning Saturday. I'm planning on gassing up my car and getting my ass up there for the opening. And, you should too!

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 9, 5-8pm
All of this great work should give pause to the Chicken Little's navel-gazing of late about the death of photography.

Photography in Denmark, Spain and Brooklyn

I'm in Denmark this week for the Friday opening of my Domesticated show in Aarhus at Galleri Image.

I'm also showing Stranded in an amazing group show, Auto. Sueño y Materia, with Edward Burtynsky, Vik Muniz, Andrew Bush, Thomas Struth and Martin Parr opening Friday at LABoral Centro de Arte in Gijón, Spain.

If you are looking for something a little closer to home this Friday, I suggest you go to my homegirl Justine Reyes' solo exhibition, Home, Away from Home, at Eastern District in Brooklyn. I'm told Justine's show will extend beyond the gallery to an ice cream truck outside. Yum.

Queens International 4

© Justine Reyes
Tonight I will be attending the opening of the Queens Museum of Art's biennial exhibition of Queens based artists. The exhibition, Queens International 4, explores issues of internationalism and multiculturalism through a large variety of mediums. I couldn't be more excited for good friend and fellow Jackson Heights resident, Justine Reyes, whose Guayabera series will be showing in the biennial. Also, I am pretty damn excited that the opening will feature food from Vendy award-winning street vendors.

Here are the details:

Queens International 4
Queens Museum of Art
January 24 – April 26
Flushing Meadows, Corona Park
Queens, NY
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 24, 6pm-12am
If you are in the Bay Area and looking for something to do, this is the last weekend to catch Road Trip at the San Jose Museum of Art. The show features prints from my Stranded series as well as work by many great artists like Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander, Robert Frank, Ed Ruscha, Catherine Opie, and Dorothea Lange.
