In Between © Amy Stein
At the end of 2007 I listed some of my career goals for 2008. I didn't think I was being overly ambitious, but I recognized that each aspiration would require a whole lot of hustle and flow to make it a reality. Well, here we are just a month in to the new year and I am already able to scratch one of those goals off the list. On February 16 my first solo show will be opening for a two month run at the Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles!
I am not one to exhibit gross displays of pride or steep in my accomplishments, but I am really over the moon about this show. Over the past two years, I have spent countless hours working on my Domesticated series. Each image represents a very long and considered process and I'm so happy it will finally be shown.
Naturally, I will heading west for the big opening reception and I would love see as many folks as possible. If you are in Southern California, please stop.
Oh, and please tell everyone you know about the show.

I can't wait to see you there!
Congratulations! I plan on attending and look forward to meeting you.
Congratulations on your show! You mentioned that each image represents a "long and considered process." I would love to hear you describe that process in much more detail. I've sometimes wondered why it is that photographers are so willing to share the product of their work, but so rarely share a description of the "work" itself. It may be they believe such an account will not be interesting to others, but I, for one, would really like to know how you search out, await, capture, process, edit and print your photographs. I realize there is not likely going to be one set routine, but maybe there are patterns or habits you've adopted. If you ever feel like sharing this information, I think many of your readers would be interested.
see you there..maybe i'll bring you a taco..
Congratulations!
I love your work, and your blog.
Unfortunately i will not be able to see it, i´m from Europe, quite far from LA...

Hi Amy,
Congratulations! I'm suprised to hear that this is your first solo show. For some reason I thought you have already had many solo shows. Wish I could be there. All the best.
beautiful series, i am amazed by all the pics! have a wonderful show, next show in NY i will be there for sure. all the best.
very cool. will be in attendance...
Amy, I like a lot of the photographs from this series but am curious as to their composition - am I right in thinking that they are staged and many of the animals are in fact not living but some sort of prop? Either that or you have a secret skill as a wildlife photographer!
Tom -- You can read the full statement about the work here.
I will add... Domesticated is a series of staged photos in the tradition of Jeff Wall, Gregory Crewdson and Philip-Lorca diCorcia. The work is not a documentary project nor is it wildlife photography. The work uses a mix of living and dead animals. I was inspired by the dioramas you see at natural history museums that show the drama of early man living in close quarters with the wild around him. I imagined a new series of narratives that would serve as the modern equivalent of that tension. The photos are recreations of real stories of human/animal interactions that took place in the transitional space between domestic habitat and wild habitat. They are set in a small town in Pennsylvania that borders a state forest.
wonderful work...found you on GG. Congrats on your show...will share your site with the Eureka Photoshop Users Group...love the wolf...
Wow, I love the photo, a lot.
