W. Eugene Smith, 1957
I recently came across a slide show of Kodachrome images on the Fortune magazine Web site. Included in the mix were a number of rare images by black and white masters Ansel Adams and Walker Evans. However, the real stunner of the group is the image above from W. Eugene Smith. In this glorious photo he manages to evoke both menace and mundanity and leaves me hoping the Fortune vaults contain more color surprises from Mr. Smith.

Hannah Whitaker: This Photo is Blowing My Mind
© Hannah Whitaker
A little over a year ago I came across this rabbit image by Hannah Whitaker and instantly fell in love. It was my desktop image for most of 2007 and now it is featured in the latest issue of Blind Spot edited by James Welling. Last year I tried to reach out to Hannah about purchasing the image, but to no avail. Hannah please, contact me!

Josef Koudelka: This Photo is Blowing My Mind
© Josef Koudelka
Last night we attended the Alessandra Sanguinetti artist talk at Aperture Gallery. Alessandra is very smart in how she approaches, executes and talks about her work and I took away a lot from the evening. While at Aperture I leafed through a copy of their new Josef Koudelka career-spanning book, Koudelka. How could one person have taken so many iconic images? It is all so good it almost makes me want to throw in the towel. I mean, how do you aspire to be a great cello player after hearing Pablo Casals play Bach's Suites for Cello? And how do you aspire to take amazing pictures after Mr. Koudelka has given the world The Hound?

Terry Falke: This Photo is Blowing My Mind
© Terry Falke
I tend to think that I have the photography landscape pretty much surveyed. Boy, was I wrong. I just discovered the work of Terry Falke and this image from his book, Observations in an Occupied Wilderness, and my mind was subsequently blown.

Richard Misrach: This Photo is Blowing My Mind
Desert Fire #153 (Man with Rifle) © Richard Misrach
While I was visiting Corey Arnold in Portland, I was flipping through his copy of Richard Misrach's Desert Cantos and rediscovered this remarkable photograph. All of Misrach's photos in that book are amazing, but I kept coming back to this one image.
