Susana Raab Solo Show in Milwaukee

Hot Dorothies © Susana Raab
The lovely and talented Susana Raab is having the first solo show of her saturated and smart images that explore America’s fascination with fast food and leisure.

The show opens tomorrow at the Dean Jensen Gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I wish I could see it. If you’re in the greater Milwaukee area (I'm looking at you Chicagraphers!), do stop by.

Here are the details:
Susana Raab: Rank Strangers
July 24 - August 29, 2009
Dean Jensen Gallery
759 N. Water Street
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Opening Reception: Friday, July 24, 6-9pm

Rank Strangers features 24 color images filled with the characters and landscapes of her work deconstructing fast-food consumption and leisure time in America. With a frequency that seems almost uncanny, she regularly has encounters with characters who could people the songbooks of Lyle Lovett and Loudon Wainwright III, among them "The Ronald McDonald's Doesn't Want You to Know About" and a slew of Elvis, Superman and Colonel Sanders wannabes.

Living in a Reversed World

Mind Hacks has an interesting post about a new study in Psychological Science that suggests a shift in our angle of site can alter our perception of time. A shift to the right expands time while a shift to the left shrinks time.

The post also links to a fantastic archival film, Living in a Reversed World, that explores how we adapt "when everything is shifted through the lens."

2009 Light Work Annual

The 2009 Light Work Annual is out now and features five images from my Stranded series with an essay by Alec Soth. I'm very grateful to Light Work for inviting me to be an Artist-in-Residence and to Alec for his thoughtful words about my work.

Three Ways of Melting a Chocolate Hare

I am really loving the colorful films of Lernert Engelberts & Sander Plug.

Be sure to view I Love Alaska. It's one of the most engaging pieces I've seen on the sometimes lonely reality of online community.

Syracuse MFA Show Opening Friday Night

© Christopher Gianunzio
Last fall semester Doug DuBois invited me to Syracuse University to speak to his students and visit with some of the graduate students. This was my first visiting artist gig and I was pretty nervous. In the end I had nothing to fear because the students were talkative, talented and eager for feedback.

Since my visit I've stayed in touch with many of the students and am now happy to announce the opening of their graduate exhibition here in New York City. I'll be at the opening tonight. Hope to see you there.

La Fotógrafos de México, Pt. 1

Several weeks ago I lead a photography book-making workshop in Mexico City for Tóxico Cultura. The workshop was attended by a great group of photographers that deserve more attention. Over the next week or so I will be showcasing some of their work.

Blurb's Photography.Book.Now Contest

2008 Photography.Book.Now winner, In The Garden by Beth Dow
Two weeks ago I lead a six day photography book workshop in Mexico City. The workshop was run by the lovely Gabriella Gomez-Mont and Tóxico Cultura and was attended by some seriously talented photographers whose work I will be showcasing in the coming weeks. The workshop was challenging, but it was made all the more rewarding because the good people of Blurb generously donated a book-making credit to each of my twenty-seven students.

I was initially a print-on-demand skeptic, but Blurb seems to be very serious about making their process easy and their product great. They also seem very serious about investing in the photography community with contests like Photography.Book.Now.

If you have been thinking about making a book of your work, you should enter this competition. Beyond the awards and the exposure of your work to some top shelf jurors, the process of considering and executing a book is something every photographer should undertake.
